Rangitoto Island
Known for its rugged lava terrain and
abundant plant life, Rangitoto island features many contrasting beauties.
Rangitoto is the most recent volcanic
island in New Zealand. The last eruption
was a mere 400 years ago.
The island is a 30-minute ferry ride
from Auckland. The ferry company
stresses the importance of returning on time.
There isn’t a place to spend the night on Rangitoto.
Elder and Sister Merkley joined us
for the excursion. He serves as the Area
Medical Authority. She assists and
neither one has much free time.
It almost felt like walking through a Wasatch Mountain canyon. The plush vegetation seemed to be emerging from dark, rich soil. A closer examination reveals the dark soil is really crushed volcanic lava.
The small lighthouse is visible from
the peak.
Rick explores the old bunker at the
peak.

The view of Auckland from the top is
splendid on this clear day. The
sailboats are a fond reminder of Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong.
We relish every sunny Saturday and
every opportunity to explore the beauties of New Zealand.
